SAFE AND TEMPORARY

What is Sedation
Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a temporary process that involves slowly, and safely adjusting the senses of the patient, so they cannot feel pain or discomfort. It helps patients relax while they are having a dental procedure performed in their mouth. It is an especially effective practice for patients with severe anxiety or phobias about dental procedures. It’s also suitable for individuals receiving a procedure that could cause more pain than what a safe dosage of a local anesthetic can fully mitigate.

Types of Sedation Used in Dentistry

Here are four types of sedation that are commonly used in sedation dentistry. Please note that, at the moment, we currently offer only nitrous oxide sedation.

Inhaled Sedation

The patient inhales a mixture of nitrous oxide, or "laughing gas," and oxygen through a mask placed on the nose to provide minimal sedation. The dentist controls the amount of gas the patient receives, and it tends to wear off quickly.

Oral Sedation

The patient is given a pill to take orally about an hour before the procedure. Depending on the dosage given, the level of sedation can range from minimal to moderate. As the sedative takes effect, the patient will feel drowsy but still be awake. In some cases, the sedative can make the patient drowsy enough to fall asleep. However, they can usually be woken up by a gentle shake. This type of sedation is most commonly associated with sedation dentistry.

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation involves injecting the sedative medication directly into the patient's veins. This allows the sedative to take effect more quickly than with oral or inhaled sedation. The dosage is then controlled by the dentist as needed, aiming for a moderate level of sedation.

At the moment, Costello Family Dentistry only offers nitrous oxide sedation, and clients are referred to clinics in Kanata and Kemptville for alternative solutions. However, we will be providing IV sedation in the future.

Deep Sedation & General Anesthetic

Stronger medications are given to the patient to bring them to a barely conscious, or unconscious state. If the patient is under the effects of a general anesthetic, they are in a deep state of sleep that they can't be awoken from until the effects of the anesthetic wear off or are reversed with medication.

Regardless of the type of anesthetic a patient receives, they will also often need a local anesthetic like dental freezing to mitigate pain in the area of the mouth where the dentist is working. This combination allows patients to remain comfortable while the dentist completes their work. We do not offer deep sedation and general anesthetic at this clinic, however we can provide a referral for you.

NITROUS SEDATIOn

Why Choose Nitrous Sedation?

Sedation therapy isn’t just a great choice for wisdom teeth extractions. It’s ideal for anyone who needs significant dental work done properly but can’t get comfortable in a dentist’s office. Whether you suffer from anxiety, a phobia or otherwise, we’re here to help you stay relaxed and stress-free. This enables us to perform the best possible work; a calm mouth and body help us deliver optimal results in a faster, more efficient manner.

We use laughing gas here at Costello Family Dentistry, which can be beneficial for a variety of circumstances. Laughing gas utilizes nitrous oxide, which is a safe and effective sedation gas that makes you feel happy and giggly. The gas is administered orally through a mask, and as the patient inhales, they start to feel sensations of euphoria, which puts them at ease.

The added benefit of laughing gas is that it doesn’t put patients into a sleepy state, keeping them awake and alert to what’s going on around them. This method of sedation is more suitable for anxiety and phobias during procedures such as tooth extractions. When receiving laughing gas, it is normal for patients to be able to resume normal activities shortly after since the effects fade faster.

The four types of sedation used in dentistry include:

  • Laughing Gas – Otherwise known as nitrous oxide sedation, laughing gas is a sedative that is inhaled and causes you to relax and be in a calm state of mind. You will still be awake and able to hear and respond to the dentist.
  • Oral Sedation – Oral sedation involves using a pill for the sedation. Similarly to the laughing gas, you will feel drowsy and calm but will not fall asleep.
  • IV Sedation – For this type of sedation, an IV line is inserted into your arm to provide a steady flow of the sedative medication. Depending on the levels administered, you may get very relaxed and drowsy, but will still be conscious.
  • General Anesthesia – With this type of sedation, you will be asleep throughout your entire procedure. You won’t feel any pain and won’t remember any part of the treatment. It is a great alternative for those who suffer from severe dental anxiety.

The effects of sedation vary from one person to the next. They can also differ based on the type of sedation that is being administered. Generally for all types of sedation you will notice stress, anxiety, and pain disappear. You may also feel slightly drowsy and feel a tingling sensation throughout your body.

The effects of sedation usually subside in a couple of hours. You may experience some numbness and drowsiness for up to 24 hours depending on how much sedative was used. Make sure to consult with your dentist to discuss your limitations, in most cases you should not operate heavy machinery following sedation.

The most notable benefits of sedation dentistry include pain and anxiety relief. With the use of sedation you will feel more calm, less stressed, and won’t feel pain. This can help dental treatments pass by quicker because dentists can work more efficiently if a patient is cooperative. Quicker and more effective appointments could also mean fewer appointments in the future!
