What is Sedation

Sedation dentistry is a temporary process that involves slowly, safely adjusting the senses of the patient so they cannot feel pain or discomfort. It’s not necessarily a method of putting patients literally “to sleep” – they’re awake but instead feel sensations of euphoria and even amusement. That’s where the term “laughing gas” comes from!

This service, offered at our Carleton Place dental clinic, is ideal for procedures when irritation or slight pain may be experienced by the patient otherwise, and often for minor treatments to ensure your comfort. At Costello Family Dentistry, we work tirelessly to ensure your absolute comfort and peace of mind.

Laughing Gas

We use laughing gas here at Costello Family Dentistry, which can be beneficial for a variety of circumstances. Laughing gas utilizes nitrous oxide which is a safe and effective sedation gas that makes you feel happy and giggly. The gas is administered orally through a mask, and as the patient inhales, they start to feel sensations of euphoria which puts them at ease. The added benefit of laughing gas is that it doesn’t put patients into a sleepy state, keeping them awake and alert of what’s going on around them. This method of sedation is more suitable for anxiety and phobias during procedures such as tooth extractions. When receiving laughing gas, it is normal for patients to be able to resume normal activities shortly after since the effects fade faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sedation dentistry is a process used for dental treatments that allow patients to relax and not feel any pain or discomfort. It’s an effective process for patients that struggle from dental anxiety. There are different types of sedation but the most common type of sedation for dentistry doesn’t actually involve the patients falling asleep – except for when using general anesthesia.

The four types of sedation used in dentistry include:

  • Laughing Gas – Otherwise known as nitrous oxide sedation, laughing gas is a sedative that is inhaled and causes you to relax and be in a calm state of mind. You will still be awake and able to hear and respond to the dentist.
  • Oral Sedation – Oral sedation involves using a pill for the sedation. Similarly to the laughing gas, you will feel drowsy and calm but will not fall asleep.
  • IV Sedation – For this type of sedation, an IV line is inserted into your arm to provide a steady flow of the sedative medication. Depending on the levels administered, you may get very relaxed and drowsy, but will still be conscious.
  • General Anesthesia – With this type of sedation, you will be asleep throughout your entire procedure. You won’t feel any pain and won’t remember any part of the treatment. It is a great alternative for those who suffer from severe dental anxiety.

The effects of sedation vary from one person to the next. They can also differ based on the type of sedation that is being administered. Generally for all types of sedation you will notice stress, anxiety, and pain disappear. You may also feel slightly drowsy and feel a tingling sensation throughout your body.

The effects of sedation usually subside in a couple of hours. You may experience some numbness and drowsiness for up to 24 hours depending on how much sedative was used. Make sure to consult with your dentist to discuss your limitations, in most cases you should not operate heavy machinery following sedation.

The most notable benefits of sedation dentistry include pain and anxiety relief. With the use of sedation you will feel more calm, less stressed, and won’t feel pain. This can help dental treatments pass by quicker because dentists can work more efficiently if a patient is cooperative. Quicker and more effective appointments could also mean fewer appointments in the future!
