Frequently Asked Questions

We get a lot of questions, naturally, about the wide range of dental services we perform here at our Carleton Place dental clinic. Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about our emergency dentistry services. Don't see yours answered here? Feel free to reach out to Costello Family Dentistry in Carleton Place.

We understand the urgency that comes with experiencing a dental emergency. We always try to book emergency appointments as soon as possible, either on the same day, or day after you contact us.

The best defense against dental emergencies is good oral hygiene. Make sure you are brushing twice daily and flossing before bed to keep you mouth clean and your teeth and gums healthy. Be careful when biting into hard foods like raw carrots or apples, and avoid biting down on foods that are solid like hard candy. If you play sports, make sure to wear all of your protective equipment properly and wear a mouthguard as well. Sometimes dental emergencies can still happen even if you take these measures so if you experience a dental emergency, contact us right away for an appointment.

If you lose one of your permanent teeth, the first step is to not panic. If you handle your lost tooth carefully, we can possibly reinsert it into the empty socket. Gently rinse the tooth in lukewarm salt water to clean it. Make sure you do not touch the root of the tooth because that will damage any remaining tissues. If that happens, it will be impossible to reattach the tooth. Keep the tooth moist by keeping it in between your cheek and jaw, or place it in a container with a saline solution or milk. Once you’ve done that, contact us to schedule an emergency appointment as soon as possible.

Apply a cold compress to your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. To manage the pain before your emergency dental appointment, take an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen (Advil), or Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Avoid taking Aspirin as its ingredients will thin your blood which can cause certain dental issues to become worse.

In any emergency, the sooner book an appointment with us, the sooner we can treat your condition. In many dental emergency cases, time is of the essence. For example, a lost tooth can be reinserted into the empty socket if you are able to see a dentist quickly enough. When you contact us, describe your situation clearly and we will book your appointment to be as soon as possible.
